Biography:
Mr. Liebetanz brings a colorful and powerfully expressive character to flute performance. European-born, his playing is very much shaped by his study with the great French flutist, Marcel Moyse. His playing has been described as “incredibly captivating” by the Mainzer Allgemenine Zeitung, “in total command of his instrument” by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and “...creating bold colors...” by the Rhein Zeitung, and “...sparkling runs and trills and dream-like phrases abducted the audience to a land in which wishing and wanting were readily answered...” by the Nordhessische Allgemeine Zeitung.
Klaus was a member of The Orchestra for Europe, The Orchestra of the State Opera at Darmstadt, Germany and other orchestras in Germany, Hawaii and Canada.
Currently a lecturer of flute and chamber music at Musicworks Northwest School of Music, Pacific Lutheran University and Shoreline College he is also a member of the Seattle Creative Orchestra, which is dedicated to the performance of 20th century cross-cultural classical music. In September of 2000 he took part in a recording project to produce a CD featuring the orchestra. Klaus appeared in July of 1999 at the International WOMAD-Music Festival in Seattle with this orchestra. He appeared with the SCO at the 2002 Summer Arts Festival of the University of Washington. He has recently recorded new Jazz-compositions by James Knapp with the Chamber Groove orchestra. Klaus appeared on Hawaii Public Radio, Northwest Public Radio and on National German Radio.
He toured Europe, California and Hawaii with the Duo Liebetanz-Kolb (flute and piano) for 6 years and has also been a member of several wind quintets and a flute and guitar duo, touring nationally and internationally.
Klaus performed as a flute soloist with the Lahnstein Philharmonia, Rhenish Chamber Orchestra, Bendorf Chamber Orchestra, New Westminster Orchestra, Prince George Symphony Orchestra, Prairie Sinfonia and Maui Philharmonic.
His competition successes include second place in the National Youth Music Competition, third place in Concours Jeunesses Musicales Europeèn, Strasbourg, France, as well as second place in Concours Tulou de Flute, Paris, France.
