Education:
Graduated from the Music Highschool (1978) and Music Conservatory (Faculty of Music, Musical Composition, and Musicology, 1984) in Cluj-Napoca. Definitive Music Teacher License (1987); Doctor of Philosophy (degree obtained in 1994, from the University of Bucharest, Faculty of Philosophy, specialization: Aesthetics). Pluridisciplinary specialization in India (1994-1995), where the main study and research theme focused on relationships between performing arts and religious experience (affiliation to the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (New Delhi). Fulbright Fellow (2001-2002, affiliated to the University of Chicago, USA). Postdoctoral research, fieldwork and documentation sojourns also in Hungary, China, Iran, Finland, England, USA.

 

Career:

Since stundenship: Music performer, composer, actor and play director with the "Students' House" in Cluj (1980-1984). Journalist and editor on a wide range of music and musicological-related topics. Member of the editorial board of the cultural magazine "Echinox" (Cluj). Music teacher (1984-1987), as well as free-lance jurnalist, collaborator for numerous cultural magazines in Romania, and also folklorist and ethnomusicologist. Since 1987: permanent member of the editorial board of the academic journal "Revista de Etnografie si Folclor" [Review for Ethnography and Folklore]. Panelist, discussant, and organizer and coordinator of numerous workshops and round tables. Collaborator to several Radio, cultural programs (1987-1989, 1998-2001). Since 1990, scientific research worker, head of the ethnomusicological department (1993-), founder and editor of the international journal "European Meetings in Ethnomusicology" (a yearbook in English) (1993-), founder and vice-president of the "Romanian Society for Ethnomusicology" (1995-) and of the National Committee of the ICTM (International Council for Traditional Music - New York) (1998-). Senior researcher.

Research and editing programs coordinator (1993-). Organizer of national symposia (1989-), organizer of international meetings (1999-). Conferences and papers delivered within academic, national and international gatherings. Scientific advisor to various cultural, scholarly, and media programs. Occasional lectures at various Universities (abroad included). Field work and documentary work done in Romania (rural and urban areas), India, China, Scandinavian countries, Greece, Turkey, Iran, UK, USA.
