Biography:
Nader Davoodi is an award winning photojournalist in his homeland
Iran. For the past decade he has been working both on and off the record to
produce ethnographically detailed works that document a very important
period in contemporary Iranian history. While Davoodi's work can best be
described as documentary, his aims to artistically capture important moments
in everyday life rather than merely document.
His most recent work in Iran Includes backstage scenes at contemporary
theater productions in Tehran (theater is a very recent development in
post-revolution Tehran), a look at the Zur Khaneh, (a place still reserved
solely for men to participate in traditional group exercises), Christmas in
an Armenian community in Tehran (including photos from a high school
Christmas play to scenes at a famous Armenian church in Tehran), the funeral
of one of Iran's most famous Actors (Fardeen) and most recently, the
important Shiia holiday, Ashura.
From 1991 to 1994 Davoodi lived in New York City, where his love for
photography and the city itself produced work he later showed in galleries
in Tehran, including a show on New York Graffiti in Tehran's famous Seyhoun
gallery and one entitled Time Out New York at Laleh gallery. Recently, Davoodi visited Los Angeles where he covered the Iranian soccer
team's visit and game in L.A. While covering the team's voyage, he also
spent a few weeks photographing various events and personalities among the
Iranian community in L.A.
His works have appeared Internationally in magazines, photo contests and
galleries. He has received Iranian press awards and has also served as a
member of the jury in various contests. His most recent award is a Golden
Medal at the 58th International photographic Salon of Japan. Aside from
working as a Freelance photojournalist, Davoodi also manages a monthly
soccer magazine (primarily photography) and teaches photography and the
history of photography at Tehran's Open University. He is a founding member
of the Iranian Photojournalists Association.
Davoodi has a Bachelor of art degree in archeology and Master of Art degree
in communications.
