Activity:
Experience :
I paint in acrylic on canvas using rich, intense colours
and strong light/dark contrast and have 2 styles: Firstly, I paint unusual, innovative predicaments and
situations in a bold humourous cartoon style. The
subject matter in
these consists of people and/or imaginary creatures in
unprescribed, funny situations. My aim in painting these
is primarily to surprise and amuse myself, but also to
present an audience with an attractive work with a humourous
bite. Hopefully, if the joke wears off, the aesthetic
qualities will not. Secondly, I paint well known scenes
of New Zealand in a cubist style. I paint these scenes
in as few blocks as
possible but while still clearly representing the subject
scene. These works sometimes give the surprising illusion
of three-dimensionality. I like to produce and exhibit
these 2 styles concurrently as they have both proven successful
at previous exhibitions, and I find painting both at once more interesting and inspiring - each style is a creative
'springboard' for the other. I also think that the audience
is interested to observe this creative 'duet'.
